چکیده

The manuscript ‘How will organic carbon stocks in mineral soils evolve under future climate? Global projections using RothC for a range of climate change scenarios’ by Gottschalk et al. describes the outcomes of an extensive modelling approach to predict global soil C stocks by end of this century. The authors used a variety of climate predictions and coupled these scenarios with projections of land use changes and net primary production rates. They’re overall conclusion is that global soil organic carbon will increase, as NPP rates accelerate faster than decomposition rates under predicted climate change scenarios. Their model approaches are based on a series of well-

Many thanks for the comments. Please see our response below. To the first comment on NPP as a surrogate for soil carbon (C) inputs: NPP-C data from IMAGE or MIAMI are not directly used as soil C inputs to the RothC model. Soil C inputs are initially estimated by the model itself using an equilibrium simulation. Such a simulation uses the given soil organic carbon (SOC) content, here from the IS...

approximate conditions in natural ecosystems, managed ecosystems are characterized by a substantial organic matter export mainly as harvest (e.g. Schulze et al. 2009). Given that currently ca. 12% of the global land area of ca. 13.4 Gha is cropped and ca. 26% used as pastures, the role of carbon exports needs to be addressed or, in case I misunderstood, the procedure of how inputs were derived ...

مدل‌سازی اثر تغییر اقلیم بر انتشار دی‌اکسیدکربن خاک در مراتع خشک (جنوب ایران)

Introduction: Carbon stored in soils particularly in arid rangelands soils is the most significant carbon sink in terrestrial ecosystems. In arid rangelands, Soils have special places in both carbon sequestration and mitigate global warming. Therefore, any small change in the soil organic carbon (SOC) leads to a significant impact on the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. Studies have shown t...

Projected loss of soil organic carbon in temperate agricultural soils in the 21st century: effects of climate change and carbon input trends

Climate change and stagnating crop yields may cause a decline of SOC stocks in agricultural soils leading to considerable CO2 emissions and reduced agricultural productivity. Regional model-based SOC projections are needed to evaluate these potential risks. In this study, we simulated the future SOC development in cropland and grassland soils of Bavaria in the 21(st) century. Soils from 51 stud...
